#### Nível 1 · Básico

Victoria and Vancouver are two cities in Canada. They are on the west coast, next to the Pacific Ocean. Victoria is on an island. You can go from Victoria to Vancouver by ferry. The boat trip takes about an hour and a half.

Many people think Canada is always very cold. But winter in these two cities is not very cold. It rains a lot, and it does not snow very often. In January, the temperature is usually between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius. Take a raincoat and good shoes!

Victoria and Vancouver are on Canada’s west coast, close to the Pacific Ocean. Victoria is the capital of the province of British Columbia, and it is on Vancouver Island. To travel between the two cities, many people take a ferry. The crossing takes about an hour and a half, and on a clear day you can see small islands and mountains from the boat.

Many visitors expect a freezing Canadian winter, but the west coast is different. The ocean keeps the weather mild. In January, it is usually between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius, and rain is much more common than snow. If you want snow, you can go up a mountain. Grouse Mountain, near Vancouver, usually has snow in winter, and people go there to ski and snowboard.

When people imagine winter in Canada, they usually picture deep snow and temperatures far below zero. That is true in much of the country, but the west coast tells a different story. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, sits at the southern end of Vancouver Island and has one of the mildest climates in Canada. Across the water, Vancouver enjoys similar weather. In January, temperatures usually stay between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius, and the main challenge is not the cold but the rain.

The two cities are connected by a ferry route, and the crossing takes about an hour and a half. For many travellers, the trip itself is a highlight, as the boat passes between small green islands with mountains in the distance.

Snow lovers do not need to go far, though. Grouse Mountain, a short drive from downtown Vancouver, usually has snow in winter, and many of its slopes stay open at night, so some people ski after work. Back in the city, Stanley Park, which is larger than New York’s Central Park, is a popular place for a walk, even on a rainy day.

Júlia is a Brazilian student who is spending three weeks in Vancouver. On her first morning, she was nervous about ordering coffee in English, so she practised the words on her way to the coffee shop.

When it was her turn, the barista smiled and asked, “What can I get started for you?” Júlia did not understand the question at first, but she guessed it meant “What do you want?” She asked for a medium latte and a blueberry muffin.

“Is that for here or to go?” asked the barista.

Ordering a coffee sounds simple until you have to do it in another language. On her first day in Vancouver, Júlia, a Brazilian student, discovered that the hardest part was not the vocabulary but the speed. The barista spoke quickly and used expressions she had never seen in her textbook, such as “What can I get started for you?” and “Room for milk?”

Instead of panicking, Júlia used a strategy her teacher had suggested: listen for the key words and ask politely when something is unclear. “Sorry, could you say that again, please?” she asked. The barista repeated the question more slowly, and Júlia ordered a medium coffee with room for milk.

When she paid, the card machine asked whether she wanted to add a tip, something she had not expected. She chose an option, took her drink and sat by the window. Later, she wrote the new expressions in her notebook. By the end of the week, she was ordering without thinking about it, and she had even started a short conversation with the barista about the rain.

Halloween, celebrated every year on October 31, is much older than most people realize. Its roots go back many centuries to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on this night the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead became blurred, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to keep wandering spirits away.

Centuries later, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their traditions to North America, where Halloween slowly became the holiday we know today. One of those traditions involved carving faces into turnips and other vegetables to make lanterns. In North America, people started using pumpkins, which were bigger and easier to carve, and the jack-o’-lantern as we know it was born.

Today, Halloween is also big business. In the United States and Canada, people spend large amounts of money on costumes, candy and decorations every year, and in some neighbourhoods decorating the house has become a friendly competition between neighbours.
